About a16z crypto

a16z crypto is the dedicated crypto and digital asset investment practice of venture capital firm Andreessen Horowitz. Based in Menlo Park, the practice was formally launched with a dedicated vehicle in 2018 under managing partner Chris Dixon. In May 2026, the team announced a rebranding to a16z Frontier to expand its mandate to AI and emerging hardware alongside decentralized networks, led by Dixon, firm cofounders Marc Andreessen and Ben Horowitz, and general partners Eddy Lazzarin and Guy Wuollet.

The firm has raised $9.8 billion across five dedicated funds. Milestone vehicles include its $4.5 billion Fund IV closed in 2022 and a $2.2 billion Fund V closed in May 2026. Capital deployment spans early-stage protocols, developer infrastructure, consumer applications, and late-stage growth rounds, paired with technical R&D and policy advocacy teams.

Its portfolio contains core networks and decentralized finance protocols. Early investments include Coinbase, Uniswap, OpenSea, and Solana. Later rounds include leading a $150 million Series B in layer-2 rollup Optimism in March 2022 and participating in Phantom's $9 million Series A in 2021 and $150 million Series C in January 2025.

Recent backing highlights restaking and modular finance. The firm led a $100 million Series B in EigenLayer in February 2024, followed by a $70 million EIGEN token purchase in June 2025. In April 2025, it led a $55 million private token round in LayerZero. In 2026, the team led a $15 million round for Bitcoin staking protocol Babylon in January and a $175 million round for lending protocol Morpho in June.
