What is Bitkey?

Bitkey is a Bitcoin-only self-custody wallet from Block, Inc. It combines a hardware device, mobile app and recovery system in a 2-of-3 multisignature design, so two of three keys must approve a transaction.

Who is behind Bitkey

Block, Inc. launched Bitkey in 2023. Jack Dorsey founded Block, formerly Square. The product became available for pre-order on December 7, 2023, and Block began shipping the hardware device in March 2024.

How the wallet works

Bitkey uses three keys generated across the hardware device, phone and server environments. The mobile app works with the device as part of the signing process, while the recovery system adds another route to access. Any two keys are required to approve a transaction. Bitkey supports Bitcoin only, rather than multiple cryptocurrencies.

Bitkey with Screen, introduced on April 27, 2026, adds a display for checking transaction details directly on the device. The Bitkey App manages the wallet and its multisignature security model. An inheritance feature, announced in November 2024, lets users designate beneficiaries for Bitcoin transfers.

Price and availability

The Bitkey wallet is listed at €230. Bitkey became available for pre-order in more than 95 countries and is available in the United States and 95+ other countries. The product is designed for self-custody, but its three-key model includes a server-held key in the signing and recovery arrangement.

Track record and risks

Bitkey released initial firmware for Bitkey with Screen in April 2026. In August 2026, it fixed a test-account-only endpoint bug that could shorten another account’s active Delay & Notify review period; Bitkey reported no evidence of exploitation or impact to customer funds.

That month, Bitkey also fixed a randomness issue in Recovery Contact and Beneficiary enrollment. The company said exploitation would require a compromise of Block’s internal systems and real-time monitoring of an enrollment flow, with no evidence of exploitation. Security update BKS.2026.08.D required the Bitkey App version 2026.11.2. The wallet remains limited to Bitcoin, and the server key introduces reliance on Block’s recovery infrastructure.

Bitkey is a Bitcoin-only hardware wallet from Block, Inc. Its security model uses three keys across the hardware device, phone app and server, with any two required to approve a transaction. That is a clear strength for long-term self-custody because losing one component does not by itself expose the wallet. The trade-off is that the server key makes the design less independent than a wallet built entirely around locally controlled devices.

Bitkey supports Bitcoin only, while its screen-equipped model, released on April 27, 2026, lets the owner verify transaction details on the device.

The companion app works with the device and supports wallet management and transactions. Recovery tools include the three-key arrangement and an inheritance feature announced in November 2024, which lets owners designate beneficiaries. The recovery path adds dependence on Block's systems.

At €230, Bitkey sits in the paid hardware-wallet category without offering broader coin coverage. It began shipping in March 2024 after launching in 2023 and is available in the United States and more than 95 other countries.

Bitkey fixed two security bugs in August 2026. One could shorten another account's Delay & Notify review period under narrow conditions; the other involved non-cryptographic randomness during Recovery Contact and Beneficiary enrollment. Bitkey reported no exploitation or customer-fund impact, and required an app update to version 2026.11.2. These incidents count against the security assessment even though fixes were issued.

Bitkey fits Bitcoin holders who want multisig recovery and a phone-led experience.

“GREAT SUPPORT If your NFC is a success you must keep the device away from your phone in order to connect to network without an error when restoring the wallet. Thanks a lot to support I had no idea and they were supper helpful, definitely recommend this wallet!”

“Hardware Failed AVOID! The hardware failed. Support was useless. Would have been better off using anything but Bitkey. If you want to protect your crypto assets, AVOID Bitkey.”

“Fine start but much to improve The existing “utxo management” is a bit misleading. True utxo management would allow you to lock/tag specific utxo’s. I really can’t see this as a serious wallet until available.”

“could not send my money the app keeps giving the error below and so far I’m unable to send my money out of bitkey. Here is the error: “We couldn't send this transaction. We are looking into this. Please try again later.” Who is looking into this? It’s my money! Why can’t I send my money?”
