Across Protocol
Intent-based cross-chain bridge using optimistic verification, processing over $40B in total volume
What is Across Protocol?
Across Protocol is an intent-based cross-chain bridge that routes transfers between Ethereum, Solana, and multiple Layer 2 networks. Rather than waiting on canonical bridge finality or relying on lock-and-mint wrapped assets, independent relayers fulfill user orders upfront on the destination chain and claim repayment later. By October 2026, the bridge had processed over $40 billion in cumulative volume across 5 million users.
Founders and funding
Across was conceived and supported by Risk Labs, the foundation team behind the UMA optimistic oracle. The project raised $10 million in a private token sale in November 2022 from investors including Hack VC, Placeholder, and Blockchain Capital at a $200 million valuation. In March 2025, Across raised an additional $41 million round led by Paradigm, with participation from Bain Capital Crypto, Coinbase Ventures, and Multicoin Capital. In September 2026, governance announced operational restructuring under Across, Inc. alongside a transition plan for the ACX token.
How transfers and settlement work
Transfers rely on an intents architecture combined with single-sided liquidity pools on Ethereum mainnet and UMA optimistic verification. When a user submits a bridge request, competing third-party relayers verify the intent and provide short-term capital by releasing native tokens on the target network immediately. Relayers are repaid after UMA optimistic oracles verify that transfers were completed correctly. The protocol connects networks including Ethereum, Base, Arbitrum, Optimism, Polygon, Solana, Linea, Zora, Unichain, Hyperliquid, and Avalanche.
Fees and access
The bridge operates on a non-custodial, permissionless basis without identity verification (KYC). Pricing is quoted dynamically per transaction without fixed protocol markups: users pay a network execution fee alongside a variable relayer fee determined by capital requirements and gas costs on the destination network. Large stablecoin transfers can also access locked-rate execution, including routing up to $50 million via Paxos Labs Transit integration.
Security track record and risks
Across was originally audited by OpenZeppelin in 2021 ahead of its public mainnet release. In July 2026, an exploit occurred when an attacker targeted off-chain event-parsing software used by Solana relayers. The attacker spoofed transaction event logs, tricking Risk Labs relayers into paying out approximately $3.35 million in relayer capital. Core smart contracts on Ethereum and Solana were not breached, and no user balances were affected. Primary risks include reliance on off-chain relayer infrastructure and optimistic verification disputes.
Pros and cons
Pros
- Average transfer speed of 1.2 seconds across supported chains
- Over $40B in cumulative volume processed without loss of user deposits
- Transfers use native assets without relying on wrapped tokens
- No identity verification (KYC) required to bridge
Cons
- July 2026 Solana relayer exploit resulted in $3.35M in stolen relayer funds
- Relies on third-party relayers maintaining destination chain liquidity
- Off-chain relayer bugs can temporarily pause specific chain routes
- ACX governance token undergoing sunsetting and corporate restructuring
Our review
Across offers near-instant intent-based bridging across EVM networks and Solana with low fees, but users rely on relayer liquidity and optimistic oracle dispute windows.
Across Protocol is an intent-based cross-chain bridge developed under Risk Labs and transferred to Across, Inc. in September 2026. Instead of locking assets and minting synthetic representations, Across uses a network of bonded relayers who front liquidity to fulfill user transfer intents on destination chains. These relayers are subsequently repaid on Ethereum through a single-sided liquidity pool once transfers are verified using UMA's optimistic oracle system. This structure enables native asset transfers without wrapping assets.
Transfers register an average completion time of 1.2 seconds, as relayers fill incoming requests immediately upon seeing the deposit transaction. Across charges zero aggregator markups; fees consist of network execution costs and dynamic relayer capital fees quoted directly per transfer. The protocol has settled more than $40 billion in volume across 5 million users. Across raised a $41 million round led by Paradigm in March 2025, alongside Bain Capital Crypto, Coinbase Ventures, and Multicoin Capital, following a $10 million private token sale in 2022 in 2022.
However, the protocol carries specific structural and operational risks:
- Relayer dependency means unusually large transfers or sudden liquidity dry-ups on niche chains can lead to delayed execution.
- In July 2026, an attacker exploited a bug in Risk Labs' off-chain Solana event-reading software, causing relayer payouts of roughly $3.35 million to $4.5 million in foundation funds before deposits were paused; smart contracts were not breached, and no user funds were lost.
- The native ACX token is undergoing sunsetting following the transition of governance and operations to Across, Inc.
Across supports transfers between major Layer 2 networks, Solana, and Ethereum.

What users say about Across Protocol
User feedback for Across Protocol is split between recommendations for its fast, low-cost cross-chain transfers and warnings about hidden spreads on large swaps.
In their own words
“PSA: Across Protocol bridge has MASSIVE hidden fees This is a warning that Across.to low fees are actually misleading, I've been planning a large swap transaction and so i've been comparing a few bridges and across UI was showing from far the best rate, that was until i did the transaction.”
“Second this, I used across.to yesterday, super simple and took 5s\~. Cheap too”
“I believe Across has the deepest integrations with Hyperliquid for bridging. And the lowest fees. USDC to USDH for instance is completely free. And many swap and bridge services are a wrapper on top of them (Jumper, LiFi, Cow swap), might as well use the source.”
