What is MoonPay?

MoonPay is a fiat-to-crypto on-ramp, off-ramp and swap provider for direct buyers, wallets, apps and financial institutions. It operates in more than 180 countries and supports integrations with over 500 crypto exchanges and wallets. MoonPay also provides hosted checkout, APIs and SDKs for partners building their own purchase and payout flows.

Company and backers

MoonPay launched in 2019. Co-founder and CEO Ivan Soto-Wright started his career in institutional finance and founded the AI fintech company Saveable in 2015. Co-founder and Chief Engineer Victor Faramond previously served as head of engineering at Hodl.vc. Co-founder Maximilian Crown is also part of the founding team. The company is headquartered in New York City.

In November 2021, MoonPay raised a $555 million Series A led by Tiger Global Management and Coatue Management, with participation from Blossom Capital, New Enterprise Associates, Thrive Capital and Paradigm Operations. In May 2026, it launched MoonPay Trade for institutional and enterprise access to digital assets across more than 200 blockchains and protocols through one API.

How the service works

Customers can buy crypto with cards, Apple Pay, Google Pay, bank transfers and local payment methods. MoonPay handles payment processing and compliance, then sends the purchased asset to a customer-provided wallet. Customers can also create a wallet for BTC and ETH through the checkout flow. The off-ramp sends crypto-sale proceeds to bank accounts and local payout methods.

For developers, hosted widgets handle the interface and onboarding. APIs and SDKs support headless, branded flows. MoonPay Gateway performs an intermediate purchase and swap before delivering selected DeFi tokens on Solana, Ethereum, Base or HyperCore.

Fees and limits

Card, Apple Pay and Google Pay purchases cost up to 4.5%, with a minimum of $3.99, €3.99 or £3.99. Bank transfers cost approximately 1%, with the same minimums. MoonPay Balance purchases have a 0% MoonPay fee when the balance is pre-funded by bank transfer. Card-based crypto sales cost up to 3.5%, while PIX payments in Brazil cost up to 2.95%. The minimum purchase is $20 or its fiat equivalent.

Coverage and risks

KYC is required on the first purchase over $150, and higher verification tiers unlock higher purchase limits. Payment methods and regional access vary. MoonPay Platform ramps are available in supported regions except the United Kingdom, while guest checkout is available in the United States excluding New York and Washington.

Card fees can make small purchases expensive. Bank transfers can take 1–3 business days, while card purchases typically arrive in 5–15 minutes. Payments can fail or be reversed, and KYC reviews can delay delivery. Customers also depend on MoonPay, its banking partners and the destination wallet, while regional rules can restrict assets or payment methods.

MoonPay is a large fiat on-ramp with off-ramp and swap tools. Its main strength is reach: the service operates in more than 180 countries and supports integrations with over 500 exchanges and wallets. Availability varies by country, asset, payment method and product. The Platform documentation excludes the United Kingdom from its listed ramp availability, while guest checkout is limited to the United States except New York and Washington.

Customers can use cards, Apple Pay, bank transfers and local methods such as PIX. Card payments cost up to 4.5%, with a minimum of $3.99, €3.99 or £3.99. Bank transfers cost approximately 1% with the same minimum, and card-based crypto sales can cost up to 3.5%. The $20 minimum purchase makes very small transactions less practical.

MoonPay handles KYC and payment processing for integrations. Its verification tiers raise purchase limits, and KYC is required on the first purchase over $150. Card purchases typically arrive in 5–15 minutes, while bank transfers take 1–3 business days. Failed payments and verification holds can delay checkout.

For developers, hosted checkout and widgets support hosted integrations. Headless APIs support custom interfaces, while MoonPay Gateway can buy supported DeFi tokens through a fiat checkout on Solana, Ethereum, Base and HyperCore.

The company launched in 2019, with Ivan Soto-Wright as co-founder and CEO, and raised a $555 million Series A round in November 2021 from Tiger Global Management, Coatue Management and other investors. It reports 30M+ verified accounts as of September 2026.
