About Digital Currency Group
Digital Currency Group (DCG) is a corporate venture and holding company founded in 2015 by Chief Executive Officer Barry Silbert, who previously established SecondMarket. Headquartered in Stamford, Connecticut, the company operates both as a direct equity investor and as an operating parent across crypto and decentralized infrastructure verticals. Executive leadership includes Silbert alongside Chief Financial Officer Mark Shifke, who assumed the finance role in 2023.
Investment scope and portfolio
DCG targets early-stage through late-stage opportunities across digital assets, protocols, analytics, and custody. Its historical investments span over 200 equity assets and 30 token positions. Early portfolio assets include major exchange venues such as Coinbase and Kraken, alongside critical infrastructure providers such as hardware manufacturer Ledger, payments processor BitPay, and data tracking firm Chainalysis. It backed the Electric Coin Company in a $3 million seed round in 2016 and participated in early financing rounds for Api3 and SSV Network.
The firm has led substantial capital rounds, including a $205 million ecosystem raise for The Graph in 2022. It took part in Lido's $73 million private token sale in 2021 and backed Limitless in its seed round in October 2025. In addition to minority equity investments, DCG operates wholly owned and majority-controlled business units. The group acquired exchange operator Luno in 2020, launched mining infrastructure firm Foundry, and introduced Yuma in November 2024 to support decentralized AI technologies.
Corporate restructuring
DCG navigated significant corporate changes following the collapse of crypto markets in 2022. Its lending subsidiary, Genesis Global Capital, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in January 2023, subsequently finishing its court-approved restructuring plan and initiating creditor distributions in August 2024. In November 2023, DCG completed an all-cash sale of media asset CoinDesk to Bullish.
