What is Gnosis Pay?

Gnosis Pay is self-custodial Visa debit card infrastructure that connects stablecoins held in Safe smart accounts to everyday payments. Its direct consumer card and web app close on December 20, 2026, at 23:59 UTC, while partner-operated card infrastructure continues. The business now focuses on white-label programs.

Company and card issuer

The UK-registered Gnosis Pay Co Ltd trades as Gnosis Pay. Monavate Limited issues the debit card under licence from Visa Europe Limited and is an Electronic Money Institution regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority. Monavate's registration number is 901097.

Custody and spending

Safe accounts hold funds under self-custody. Each spending account links to a Safe and a configured token, with authorization to spend that token for card payments. The consumer card supports spending EURe, GBPe and USDC directly from a Safe, alongside Apple Pay and Google Pay.

Virtual and physical cards remain supported. Current account documentation lists Celo with USDC and USDT, and Gnosis Chain with EURe, GBPe and USDCe. Partner APIs cover account creation and card management, while the payment system handles authorization and Visa settlement. Fiat rails include EUR IBAN and BRL Pix integrations.

Fees and eligibility

The consumer card has no purchase or annual fee, and card ordering and physical delivery are free. Card-purchase gas is sponsored. Foreign exchange carries a 0% Gnosis Pay markup, with Visa exchange rates applied, while replacement including shipping costs 4.99 EURe/GBPe/USDCe.

ATM withdrawals are free up to 5 withdrawals or 200 EURe/GBPe/USDCe per month, whichever comes first. Additional withdrawals cost 2%. The card works in 30+ EEA countries, and registration requires identity verification through Sumsub, including residence eligibility checks. Partner programs have custom commercial terms and can charge optional fees such as FX fees.

Track record and limitations

Picnic was its first Latin American partner. Its card launched in Brazil in May 2025.

On June 1, 2026, attackers exploited a vulnerability affecting the card infrastructure's Delay Module and Roles Module. Treasury manager NOCA detected the attack. Gnosis Pay identified the root cause within two hours, and in July 2026, Gnosis reported absorbing the losses and restoring all affected user funds.

Cardholders received the consumer closure notice on September 21, 2026. The legacy GNO cashback program ended September 30, 2026. Safe balances remain self-custodial and withdrawable after closure, but card payments still depend on the issuer and program operator. The June exploit exposed smart-contract risks associated with account spending permissions.

Gnosis Pay combines self-custodial stablecoin spending with low card fees, but its direct consumer card closes in December 2026 and its infrastructure has suffered an exploit.

Gnosis Pay's main advantage is spending stablecoins from a self-custodial Safe account rather than depositing them into a card provider's custodial balance. Its immediate drawback is closure: cardholders were notified on September 21, 2026 that the direct consumer card and web app will stop working on December 20, 2026 at 23:59 UTC. Partner-operated card infrastructure continues. The direct card therefore has only short-term use for existing holders and cannot support recurring payments beyond closure.

Costs are a clear strength against cards with issuance charges or provider FX markups. Consumer card ordering and delivery are free, purchases carry no fee, and the annual fee is zero. Gnosis Pay adds no FX markup, although Visa exchange rates apply. Purchase gas is sponsored. ATM access is less generous: up to 5 withdrawals or 200 EURe/GBPe/USDCe per month are free, whichever comes first, followed by 2% per additional withdrawal. Replacement including shipping costs 4.99 EURe/GBPe/USDCe. Partner-program pricing is separate from these consumer terms.

Apple Pay and Google Pay support make everyday checkout practical. The card works in 30+ EEA countries, but merchant acceptance does not mean worldwide registration eligibility. Sumsub identity verification is required. Spending EURe, GBPe and USDC directly from a Safe requires comfort with on-chain accounts; the product is not a conventional bank account with card access. The legacy GNO cashback program ended on September 30, 2026.

The operator is UK-registered Gnosis Pay Co Ltd. Monavate Limited issues the debit card under licence from Visa Europe Limited and is an FCA-authorised electronic money institution. The card infrastructure suffered a serious security failure. Attackers exploited its Delay Module and Roles Module on June 1, 2026. Treasury manager NOCA detected the attack, and Gnosis Pay identified the root cause within two hours. Gnosis reported in July that it absorbed the losses and restored all affected funds.

The exploit demonstrates the smart-contract exposure that remains with self-custody. Card payments also depend on the program operator. Partner apps now determine the continuing customer experience under their own commercial terms, while holders retain control of their Safe balances and withdrawal access after the direct service closes.

In their own words

“The ongoing operations piece is what stands out here. Launching a card is one milestone; managing issuing, compliance, and disputes is a continuous job. Great to see that built into the offering 👏”

“Held €6M and moved €30M is the useful split. Balances sitting in an app are not the same as money that actually cleared at a merchant”

“Tenho cartão de vocês pela PicNic aqui no Brasil. Fiz compra no início do mês passado, cancelada no mesmo dia. Estou quase dois meses esperando reembolso que deveria ser em até 12 dias. Estou me sentindo roubado. Google Pay e loja confirmaram reembolso, porém não foi creditado.”

Can you build a stablecoin card program without us?

Sure. You just need to connect a processor, run KYC, KYB and sanctions, meet Visa's scheme rules, reconcile stablecoin settlement, form an agreement with a card issuer, wire up fiat rails, build refund and dispute handling...

Or: one API.

Picnic @usePicnicBR was the first Gnosis Pay partner in Latin America. The card went live in Brazil in May 2025.

Today more than 60,000 people in Brazil use the app, and last month Picnic relaunched as a Global Account: reais, dollars, euros and crypto in one place, with the card on top.

Let's have a look at what Picnic is and why Brazil turned out to be such a good fit 👇

Bringing crypto closer to mainstream finance means making sense of risk in a practical way. That's why we partner with @elliptic.

In digital assets, risks move quickly. Reliable data lets us identify early patterns, make better decisions and create stronger controls, and Elliptic is where that data comes from:

🛡️ Wallet and transaction risk assessed across every card and account we run for partners.
🛡️ Configurable controls that flag and escalate high-risk activity automatically, without slowing down everyday payments.
🛡️ A compliance foundation partners can build on as they launch new card programs, currencies and markets.

It lets us keep moving fast, with the confidence that we're identifying and addressing the right risks.

In the words of our MLRO, Caio Beck: "Elliptic has been instrumental in the success of our blockchain monitoring program".

Every partner program on @GnosisPay starts with that monitoring already switched on ✅
