Bitpanda Card
Visa debit card with 1% crypto cashback and spending from 600+ assets
What is Bitpanda Card?
Bitpanda Card is a custodial Visa debit card linked to a Bitpanda account. It lets cardholders spend crypto assets, precious metals and fiat without moving funds to a separate card balance. Eligible crypto-funded purchases earn 1% cashback.
Company and funding
Bitpanda GmbH operates from Vienna, Austria. Eric Demuth, Paul Klanschek and Christian Trummer founded the company in 2014 and remain identified as its co-founders. Bitpanda Group AG is the parent company. Reported funding includes $58.2 million in September 2020, $160 million from Valar Ventures and DST Global partners in March 2021, and a $263 million Series C led by Valar Ventures in August 2021. The company had 730 employees in December 2023 and reported 4.5M+ customers in May 2024.
How the card works
The card uses Bitpanda’s custodial account model, so the assets remain in the Bitpanda portfolio rather than in a self-custody wallet. Full KYC is required. Cardholders choose a primary payment asset and a fallback asset in the app. At checkout, Bitpanda sells the selected asset and converts it into euros to settle the Visa transaction. More than 600 crypto assets are available for spending, as well as metals and fiat balances. The card comes in physical and virtual formats and supports Apple Pay. It also provides transaction notifications and card controls in the app.
Fees and limits
Account opening, monthly use and initial shipment are free. Bitpanda lists a €0 non-EUR FX fee, although Visa mark-up fees can apply. ATM withdrawals cost 2% or €2, whichever is higher, and local ATM fees may be added. A replacement card costs €5.90, while each additional physical card costs €10. The euro daily ATM limit is €500 and the daily spending limit is €10,000. The weekly and monthly spending limits are €70,000 and €280,000.
Availability and risks
The card is issued by Transact Payments Malta Limited under a Visa licence. The issuer holds authorisation from the Malta Financial Services Authority as a financial institution. Availability is limited to eligible euro-area residents, while use abroad can still incur Visa mark-up fees. The product launched in 2021.
The main trade-off is custody: access depends on Bitpanda and its regulated card issuer. Cashback applies only to eligible crypto-funded purchases, while spending metals, fiat and stablecoins excludes the transaction from the cashback programme. Selling assets at checkout also exposes each payment to Bitpanda’s conversion rate and applicable premiums. Bitpanda cut 35% of its workforce in June 2022 during a period of falling crypto prices.
