What is Chronicle?

Chronicle is a decentralized oracle protocol that provides cryptographic price feeds and verifiable asset data to on-chain financial applications. Originating in 2017 to secure MakerDAO, the network serves decentralized finance applications that require real-time collateral valuation.

Team and operational background

Chronicle Labs is the development company supporting the protocol, founded by Niklas Kunkel. Kunkel previously was a founding team member at MakerDAO, where he built Ethereum oracles used for the DAI stablecoin, after working at IBM Research on Hyperledger. The organization is headquartered in Zug, Switzerland, and coordinates an internationally distributed remote development team.

Protocol architecture and asset verification

Chronicle delivers data feeds through Chronicle Protocol, its decentralized oracle protocol. Alongside standard token market rates, the network supplies real-time collateral verification through its Proof of Asset framework. This tooling publishes off-chain portfolio valuations directly on-chain, including net asset values for tokenized multifamily real estate. The Chronicle Dashboard provides real-time visibility into oracle data feeds and verification status.

Adoption and ecosystem track record

Its data feeds secure critical infrastructure across multiple major decentralized lending markets and tokenization platforms, including Sky, Morpho, Centrifuge, Spark, Grove, Securitize, and Superstate. In October 2026, the protocol integrated with Morpho to publish verified net asset values for tokenized multifamily real estate portfolios used as loan collateral.

Risks and technical trade-offs

Protocols relying on Chronicle inherit core decentralized oracle trade-offs. Applications remain exposed to latency during severe on-chain congestion and discrepancies between off-chain asset appraisals and liquid secondary markets.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Originated inside MakerDAO in 2017
  • Provides collateral feeds for protocols including Sky, Morpho, and Centrifuge
  • Specialized Proof of Asset framework for verifiable tokenized real-world collateral

Cons

  • Heavy exposure to off-chain appraisal quality for tokenized asset feeds
  • Developer integration details are not as widely self-serve as generalist oracles

Chronicle began inside MakerDAO in 2017. Its development company, Chronicle Labs, is headquartered in Zug, Switzerland, and was founded by Niklas Kunkel. The protocol supplies on-chain price data alongside verification feeds for real-world assets.

Protocols including Morpho, Sky, Spark, Securitize, Superstate, and Centrifuge use its infrastructure for collateral and tokenized-asset data across lending and real estate portfolios. Through its Proof of Asset framework, Chronicle publishes net asset values (NAV) and collateral checks directly on-chain.

  • Specialized data infrastructure for tokenized real-world assets and lending vaults that need independent asset verification.

Decentralized lending protocols and tokenized asset issuers use the platform for asset verification and price feeds.

Reserve checks = confirmation that something backs a token

Proof of Asset = visibility into what actually backs it

For tokenized assets, confirming that a token is backed is the bare minimum. Onchain platforms also need insight into the composition and characteristics of that backing to assess risk and scale confidently.

Knowing the price of a tokenized fund share is one thing. Verifying the assets underlying its value is another.

For tokenized funds to be used as collateral and integrated into onchain financial markets, reliable asset data is essential.

Proof of Asset provides the verification layer that makes this possible.
