MetaMask
Self-custodial wallet from ConsenSys, launched in 2016 and used by 100M+ people
What is MetaMask?
MetaMask is a self-custodial cryptocurrency wallet for accessing blockchain applications. Developed by ConsenSys, it is available as a browser extension and mobile app, with more than 100 million users worldwide reported in October 2026.
Who is behind it
ConsenSys develops MetaMask. The wallet launched in 2016 and celebrated its 10th birthday in July 2026. MetaMask’s security work includes monthly Crypto Security Reports authored by Security Director Luker, who is also a regular industry conference speaker and holds an official ETH Security Badge designated by The DAO.
How the wallet works
MetaMask is self-custodial, so users control the wallet’s private keys and Secret Recovery Phrase. The browser extension supports Chrome, Firefox, Brave, Opera and Edge. Mobile apps run on iOS and Android. Google and Apple social login can create, back up and restore a wallet through an encrypted recovery process using a social account and password.
The wallet supports Ethereum, Bitcoin, Solana, Tron and major EVM networks including Arbitrum, Optimism and Base. Multichain Accounts group EVM, Solana and Bitcoin addresses under one account. MetaMask supports ETH, ERC-20, ERC-721 and ERC-1155 assets, along with dApp connections, NFTs, staking and hardware wallets including Ledger and Trezor on the extension.
Fees and trading
MetaMask Swaps charges a 0.875% service fee. Quotes include gas fees, and the swap system aggregates routes across major networks, including Ethereum, Solana, Linea, Sei, Monad, Tron and Arbitrum. Perpetual futures are powered by Hyperliquid and offer up to 50x leverage on more than 150 assets. Perps are not available in the USA, UK, Ontario or Belgium.
Availability and track record
The wallet is free to download and its core self-custody functions do not require KYC. Some products have separate regional limits. MetaMask Card is available in more than 40 countries, while tokenized real-world assets through Ondo Global Markets are for non-US users in supported regions.
MetaMask says it is regularly audited by security firms and blocked 6.5 million malicious site visits in 2025. In October 2026, an infrastructure security incident led to precautionary validator exits. MetaMask said there was no evidence that its wallets or customer funds were affected, although an estimated 0.36 ETH in block-production payments was diverted.
Risks and limitations
Self-custody puts recovery-phrase loss and phishing exposure on the user. Browser extensions can be targeted by malicious sites or compromised software, while swap fees sit on top of the underlying trading route and network costs. Perps add liquidation risk and exposure to Hyperliquid. Social login changes recovery mechanics but still depends on the linked account and password.

Our review
MetaMask combines broad multichain access with self-custody, but its 0.875% swap fee and expanding attack surface raise the cost of convenience.
MetaMask is a self-custodial wallet from Consensys, available as a browser extension and mobile app. It supports Ethereum, Bitcoin, Solana, Tron and major EVM networks, including Arbitrum, Optimism, Base and Polygon. Multichain Accounts group EVM, Solana and Bitcoin addresses under one account and recovery phrase.
Users control the wallet keys, and MetaMask supports hardware wallets including Trezor, Ledger, Lattice, Keystone and AirGap Vault on the extension. Social Login offers Google or Apple recovery with a password and distributed key management, but the traditional Secret Recovery Phrase remains the more direct recovery method. Phishing and malicious browser extensions remain material risks for this wallet type.
MetaMask offers token and NFT management, cross-chain swaps, staking, bridging, a card and perpetuals. Swaps aggregate routes across major networks, but the wallet charges a 0.875% service fee on top of network and route costs. Perpetuals are powered by Hyperliquid and offer up to 50x leverage, but are unavailable in the USA, UK, Ontario and Belgium. The trading features also involve counterparty risks.
Consensys has maintained MetaMask since its 2016 launch, and the site reports more than 100 million users. The company says it is regularly audited by security firms and blocked 6.5 million malicious site visits in 2025. In October 2026, an infrastructure security incident led to precautionary validator exits. MetaMask said wallets and customer funds were not affected, while about 0.36 ETH in block-production payments went to another wallet. The incident remains part of the wallet's security history.
MetaMask suits users who need dApp access across several networks and hardware-wallet connections.

In their own words
“industry leading phishing detection”
“usdc as gas on mainnet is actually pretty handy, saves the classic dance of realising you've got zero eth right when you need to send something. still keep a bit of eth around out of habit though, old paranoia dies hard”
“Metamask wallet hacked on Sep 28 My wallet got hacked and In lost (Hype, Avax, Matic, FET, BIGTIME and many other coins) worth 16k$ bought at 35K. I keep funds across multiple wallets and had recently moved funds to metamask before I could push them to ledger.”
“Firefox Having problems login to my Metamask on Firefox. Tired all the support suggestions. I can login on Brave for one account but the second account is suppose to connect to Firefox but just cycles tring to login. Been going on for a couple of days.”
“Metamask keeps suggesting I pay half a dollar transaction fee on sending USDC but I always change it to look and pay 5 cents and the transaction gets executed the same. It even shows the exact same predicted time of 48 seconds for high, market and low so why does it suggest so much?”
“How does the card work? I can’t do anything I‘ve applied for the card some months ago and everything was OK. Now I didn’t use the card for a few months and didn’t put any funds on it either but now when I open the card in Meta Mask all i get is this? I can’t do anything. I can’t manage the card.”
