What is Tangany?
Company and ownership
Tangany GmbH is a Munich custodian that sells crypto custody business to business. Banks, brokers, fintechs and corporates plug into its platform and offer crypto products under their own names, while Tangany holds the assets. The founders began building the software in 2018 with a German EXIST startup grant and incorporated the company in January 2019. Co-founder Martin Kreitmair is CEO, and co-founder Christopher Zapf is chief compliance officer.
Venture investors fund the company. High-Tech Gründerfonds (HTGF) led its first round in February 2020, and Nauta Capital led a €7 million seed round in April 2022. Baader Bank, Elevator Ventures and Heliad Crypto Partners led a €10 million Series A in September 2025. At that point Tangany reported more than 60 institutional clients and over 700,000 customer accounts. Assets under custody had passed €3 billion, up from about €400 million in 2022.
Custody model and security
Partners reach the custody platform through an API. Private keys are protected with hardware security modules (HSM) and multi-party computation (MPC), and Tangany says its staff cannot access them. The platform runs fully in the cloud across geographically separated data centers. Wallets can be set up as omnibus or segregated structures, and per-user accounting records each end customer's balance.
Client assets are held on the clients' behalf and kept apart from company funds; the security FAQ says they would not fall into the insolvency estate. Tangany's liability for losses it causes is capped at the assets' market value at the time of loss. The company reports ISO 27001:2022 certification and regular penetration tests, and recipient addresses can be whitelisted.
Regulation and insurance
BaFin granted Tangany a crypto custody license under the German Banking Act (KWG) in October 2021, and the firm still calls itself a qualified crypto custodian under that law. On August 8, 2025, BaFin authorized Tangany GmbH as a MiCA crypto-asset service provider for custody and administration of crypto-assets and for transfer services. ESMA's register shows the authorization passported to every other EEA country, and France's AMF lists August 12, 2025 as the French start date. In March 2026 Tangany announced a BaFin payment services license under PSD2 for services involving e-money tokens.
In April 2023 Tangany announced wallet theft insurance, naming Great Lakes SE, a Munich Re subsidiary, as risk carrier and Marsh as broker. Its product page now describes cover against theft and hacking attacks backed by a global reinsurance group. The security FAQ states that no fixed coverage limit can be guaranteed for individual customers.
Products and integrations
The Custody API creates wallets and submits transactions, including smart contract calls. A Customers API carries KYC data so partners can onboard end customers without duplicate checks. The Settlement API books transfers on a virtual ledger and settles them on-chain from omnibus wallets, which cuts network fees. Access uses OAuth 2.0, and a sandbox is available on request. Other modules handle compliance screening and crypto accounting that syncs with external bookkeeping systems.
Asset coverage spans more than 250 cryptocurrencies, which Tangany puts at about 98% of market volume, plus every EVM chain. Tokenized securities and NFTs can also be held. Staking launched in 2024 with Kiln as infrastructure partner and now covers Ethereum, Solana, Cardano and NEAR, with no lock-up period. Recent mandates include wallet infrastructure for AllUnity's EURAU euro stablecoin, announced in November 2025, and custody for Nexo's clients in the European Economic Area.

Our review
Tangany is a well-licensed choice for European firms that want white-label custody and staking through an API, with a MiCA authorization that covers the whole EEA. The missing SOC 2 report and the absence of a described cold storage tier are its main gaps for institutional buyers.
Tangany's main selling point is its licensing. It has run a BaFin-licensed custody business since 2021, and its MiCA authorization now travels across the EEA, so a broker in Spain or a bank in Austria can add crypto under its own brand without seeking a custody authorization of its own. The PSD2 license from March 2026 extends the offer into payment services for e-money tokens, although Tangany said at the time that partner launches were still in preparation.
Scale supports the model. Assets under custody rose from about €400 million in 2022 to more than €3 billion by 2025, and the clients Tangany names include eToro, Bitvavo, flatexDEGIRO and Nexo. Partners that want more than storage can add the KYC data exchange and the off-chain settlement ledger, which keeps internal transfers off the blockchain. Staking terms favor the partner, since Tangany compensates slashing losses.
Security assurance is thinner. Tangany cites ISO 27001:2022 but no SOC 1 or SOC 2 report. Keys sit in a cloud-hosted HSM and MPC setup built for round-the-clock execution, and Tangany does not describe a cold storage tier. The insurance program names Great Lakes SE as carrier, yet the FAQ says no fixed limit can be guaranteed per customer. Asset coverage is wide on paper, while the public pages name networks only by family and by staking chain.
End customers sit one step removed. They have no direct account or app at Tangany and manage holdings through the partner, so a partner's exit can force a move: Bitget's French users were told to withdraw their assets after Tangany's temporary custody service for them ended in June 2026. Outside eToro, Tangany's own transfer-out service handles only ENJ and EOS.
Tangany fits European banks and brokers that want white-label custody with an API and an EEA passport from one German counterparty. Stablecoin issuers looking for a MiCA-authorized custodian are another match. Buyers that need a SOC 2 report or offline cold storage will find it a weaker one.
