What is Anchorage Digital?

Company and ownership

Anchorage Digital is the brand of Anchor Labs, Inc., a Delaware corporation founded in San Francisco in 2017 by Nathan McCauley, now CEO, and Diogo Mónica, now executive chairman. Its services run through wholly owned subsidiaries, with offices in New York, Porto, Singapore and Sioux Falls, South Dakota, where the bank is based. The board includes representatives of GIC, a16z, KKR, Paradigm and Blockchain Capital.

Equity rounds from 2018 to 2021 raised $487 million, ending with a $350 million Series D led by KKR at a valuation above $3 billion. In February 2026 Tether made a $100 million strategic equity investment at a $4.2 billion valuation, paired with the first employee tender offer; Anchorage said it chose employee liquidity over new primary capital. Acquisitions include Mountain Protocol in May 2025, followed by Hedgey and Securitize For Advisors, and the payouts platform Routable in October 2026.

Custody model and security

Client assets sit with Anchorage Digital Bank, National Association, which the company describes as a federally chartered, SEC-qualified custodian. Keys are held in hardware security modules, and transactions pass biometric approvals and quorum-based policies before signing. SEC filings for the iShares Bitcoin Trust and the Grayscale Ethereum Trust ETF state that Anchorage must keep those funds' private keys in cold storage.

Accounts are segregated and bankruptcy-remote. Staked tokens remain in each client's own wallets without pooling or rehypothecation. Anchorage holds SOC 1 Type 2 and SOC 2 Type 2 reports, with SOC 2 examinations running since 2021. Porto, the self-custody wallet, comes from a separate affiliate, Anchorage Innovations, LLC: clients hold their own keys on HSM hardware, and that entity is not a custodian.

Regulation and insurance

The OCC chartered the bank on January 13, 2021, converting the South Dakota-chartered Anchorage Trust Company. In April 2022 the regulator issued a consent order over deficiencies in the bank's BSA/AML compliance program, and it terminated the order on August 21, 2025. Anchorage Digital NY, LLC received a New York BitLicense, number 0000041, in December 2024. Anchorage Digital Singapore Pte. Ltd. has been licensed by the Monetary Authority of Singapore as a Major Payment Institution since November 2024. Anchorage Services, LLC is an NFA-registered introducing broker.

On October 21, 2026 the company said a subsidiary, Anchorage Digital Ireland, plans to seek MiCA authorization as a crypto-asset service provider and electronic money institution status to issue e-money tokens; it holds neither yet. Anchorage states that digital assets in custody are not guaranteed by the company and are not covered by FDIC or SIPC insurance. Fiat custody runs through an FDIC-insured, licensed sub-custodian.

Products and integrations

The platform adds staking on more than 20 networks, governance voting from custody, agency and principal trading, and Atlas, a settlement network that lets clients trade on Binance while their assets stay in custody. The bank issues stablecoins for partners, among them Tether's US-regulated USA₮ and Ethena's USDtb. Since October 2026 the Singapore entity has offered non-US institutions USD accounts and SWIFT transfers through Standard Chartered, with round-the-clock settlement over Atlas.

Developers use an API documented at docs.anchorage.com, with OpenAPI specs for versions 2 to 4 and a separate Porto reference. Porto lists about 60 networks and native staking on more than 15. Custody support is published as a registry with one entry per asset and network. Networks across the platform include Bitcoin, Ethereum, Solana, Sui, Aptos, Avalanche, Tron, Polkadot, Hyperliquid and Monad.

Anchorage Digital fits US institutions that want a federally chartered bank as custodian, with staking and Atlas settlement on the same accounts. Buyers who need a published insurance policy or EU coverage today will find gaps.

Anchorage's main draw is the charter. It has held a national trust bank charter since January 2021 and calls itself the first federally chartered crypto bank in the US. ETF sponsors have used it: the iShares Bitcoin Trust named Anchorage an additional bitcoin custodian in 2025, and Grayscale signed an Anchorage custody agreement for its Ethereum Trust ETF in August 2025. Staking and voting happen inside segregated custody wallets, which matters to funds that cannot move assets to a third-party staking service.

The compliance record is mixed. The 2022 consent order cited deficiencies in the bank's BSA/AML program, a basic requirement for any bank, and it stayed in place for more than three years. The OCC lifted it in August 2025, saying the bank's safety and soundness no longer required the order, at a time when federal agencies were easing their stance on crypto. A separate risk sits at the industry level: in October 2026 the Independent Community Bankers of America sued the OCC in federal court in Washington, challenging its authority to charter national trust banks for activities beyond fiduciary work.

Insurance is the main gap. Anchorage leans on its charter, HSM design and SOC reports, and its custody pages name no insurance policy for digital assets, while BitGo, for comparison, publishes a $250 million limit. Asset coverage is broad, though long-tail tokens have to be checked one network at a time in the registry. Outside the US, the licenses Anchorage lists are in Singapore, and its EU application is still a plan.

The product set has grown fast through deals: stablecoin issuance for Tether and Ethena, Binance settlement over Atlas, USD accounts through Standard Chartered and Routable's payouts business. That gives institutions one regulated counterparty for custody and dollar movement, though most of those lines launched in 2025 or 2026.

Best fit: US asset managers, ETF issuers, banks and corporate treasuries that want a federally chartered custodian with staking. Trading firms active on Binance can keep collateral in custody through Atlas. Teams that want to hold their own keys can use Porto instead of bank custody.
