Company and ownership
BitGo began operating in 2013 as a multi-signature bitcoin wallet company founded by Mike Belshe and Ben Davenport. Belshe is co-founder, CEO, CTO and president, and he can exercise a majority of the voting power, with Class B shares carrying 15 votes each. The parent, BitGo Holdings, Inc., is headquartered in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, and had 603 full-time employees at the end of 2025.
Before going public, BitGo raised $169.5 million in four private rounds, the last a $100 million Series C in 2023 at a $1.75 billion valuation. Its Class A stock began trading on the NYSE as BTGO on January 22, 2026; the IPO sold 11,026,365 shares at $18.00 for about $198.5 million in gross proceeds. In August 2026 BitGo bought NYDIG's institutional trading business, which adds derivatives, structured products, financing and capital markets services.
Custody model and security
Qualified custody runs through BitGo Bank & Trust, National Association, and BitGo says the service is fully supported by cold storage; over 95% of client assets were held cold at December 31, 2025. Wallets use patented multi-signature and multi-party computation technology, including a threshold signature scheme, and the security page describes M-of-N key structures and hardware security modules. Clients can also run their own hot or cold self-custody wallets on the platform.
BitGo has completed SOC 1 Type 2 and SOC 2 Type 2 examinations and, in August 2025, received Level 3 certification under the CryptoCurrency Security Standard. Its 10-K states that it has not lost client funds held in its custody and that client assets at its trust companies are segregated.
Regulation and insurance
In December 2025 the OCC approved converting the South Dakota-chartered BitGo Trust Company, Inc. into BitGo Bank & Trust, N.A., a national trust bank with fiduciary and custodial powers. BitGo New York Trust Company, LLC has held an NYDFS limited purpose trust charter since March 2021. BitGo Europe GmbH received a MiCA license from BaFin in May 2025 and passports it across 30 EEA countries. Dubai's VARA licenses one BitGo entity for custody and another as a broker-dealer, and BitGo Singapore Pte. Ltd. holds a Major Payment Institution license from the Monetary Authority of Singapore.
Other registrations cover FinCEN and state money transmission, an SEC-registered broker-dealer, a Swiss VQF affiliation and a FINTRAC money services business registration in Canada, with applications pending in India, South Korea and Taiwan. Insurance pays up to $250 million for digital assets lost or stolen while BitGo Bank & Trust holds all keys, issued by a syndicate in the Lloyd's of London and European marketplace. Hot wallets and setups where the client or a third party holds some keys fall outside it.
Products and integrations
Staking runs from custody, with $11.9 billion in assets staked in the second quarter of 2026. ETF clients include 21Shares and Canary Capital, whose Marinade Solana ETF holds and stakes SOL with BitGo. The Go Network gives clients near-instant settlement with each other. BitGo also sells stablecoin infrastructure: it powers SoFiUSD for SoFi Bank and calls itself issuer and infrastructure provider for World Liberty Financial's USD1.
Individual investors can get qualified custody at BitGo Bank & Trust at no cost, and BitGo Europe offers trading in more than 100 crypto assets plus staking through web and mobile apps. Developers get a REST API, a JavaScript SDK, webhooks and an MCP server. Supported networks include Bitcoin, Ethereum, Solana, XRP Ledger, Cardano, Sui, Polkadot, Hedera, Bittensor, Canton and Robinhood Chain.
