What is Ripple Custody?

Company and ownership

Ripple Custody is the institutional custody software line of Ripple Labs, Inc., the San Francisco company that Chris Larsen and Jed McCaleb founded in 2012. Brad Garlinghouse is chief executive and Monica Long is president. Larsen serves as executive chairman. Ripple has raised about $796 million in disclosed rounds, most recently $500 million in November 2025 at a $40 billion valuation.

Acquisitions built the product. Ripple bought Swiss custody technology firm Metaco for $250 million in May 2023 and added Palisade, an MPC wallet and custody company, in November 2025. It also owns Standard Custody & Trust Company, a New York trust company acquired in June 2024 that issues the RLUSD stablecoin.

Custody model and security

Clients run Ripple Custody under their own control, and Ripple states that it cannot sign transactions or access client assets. Institutional Custody, also called Vault, serves banks and regulated institutions with HSM-backed key management on premises or in the cloud, with optional MPC. Vault setups range from hot to cold, including air-gapped environments. Wallets is an API-first wallet-as-a-service for fintechs that uses MPC-TSS with no root key and keeps key shares in the customer's own cloud.

Ripple's pages cite FIPS 140-2 Level 3 HSMs, with Level 4 certification available through partners depending on the deployment model. In February 2026 Ripple added Securosys CyberVault HSM and cloud HSM options. A policy-as-code engine checks each transaction against client rules before execution. Chainalysis and Elliptic screening runs on the transaction layer, and Notabene is also integrated. Ripple lists SOC 2 Type II and ISO 27001 compliance, and its Trust Center provides the SOC 2 report on request.

Regulation and licenses

Ripple says its entities hold more than 85 licenses and registrations. Standard Custody & Trust Company has a limited purpose trust charter from the New York State Department of Financial Services, and Ripple Markets DE LLC holds a New York virtual currency license plus money transmission and related licenses in 43 US jurisdictions. On October 26, 2026, the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency gave final approval to Ripple National Trust Bank, which will oversee RLUSD reserves and, once open, will be authorized to provide fiduciary digital asset custody.

Outside the US, Luxembourg's CSSF granted Ripple an electronic money institution license in February 2026 and a MiCA crypto-asset service provider authorization in July 2026 covering all 30 EEA countries. The UK Financial Conduct Authority approved an EMI license and a cryptoasset registration in January 2026. Ripple Markets APAC holds a Major Payment Institution license from the Monetary Authority of Singapore, and Ripple Markets Ireland is registered as a virtual asset service provider with the Central Bank of Ireland. In Brazil, Ripple has said only that it plans to apply for a VASP license.

Products and integrations

Vault supports 28 ledgers, among them Bitcoin, Ethereum, Solana, the XRP Ledger, Canton and Hedera, with ERC-20, SPL, TRC-20 and XRPL token support. Wallets covers 11 chains. The Vault ledger table lists native staking for Cardano, Polkadot and Tezos, and a February 2026 release added staking through Figment that names Ethereum and Solana. Tokenization tools issue and redeem securities and stablecoins on the XRP Ledger and EVM networks.

Ripple names BBVA, DBS, DZ Bank, Intesa Sanpaolo, Societe Generale-FORGE and Absa Bank among custody users, and Korea's Kbank is deploying the wallet product. Its homepage counts more than 1,000,000 custody wallets.

Our review

3.8/5
Good

A good fit for banks that want custody software running on their own HSMs, backed by large bank references. It does not hold client assets, and Vault coverage stops at 28 ledgers.

Ripple Custody suits banks that want to run digital asset custody on their own infrastructure, and its reference clients reflect that. BBVA Switzerland runs it inside its core banking system, DZ Bank uses it for its digital custody service, and Kyobo Life Insurance used it for tokenized government bond settlement in Korea.

The HSM-first design is the draw for that audience. Banks keep keys in hardware they control and can deploy on premises, while Ripple stays a software vendor with no access to client assets. The Palisade deal added an MPC wallet product for fintechs to the same platform, and the policy engine blocks transactions that break client rules before they execute.

The parent's finances limit vendor risk. By November 2025 Ripple had completed six acquisitions in just over two years, two of them valued above $1 billion, and it then raised $500 million of new equity.

Asset coverage is the main limit. Vault lists 28 ledgers and Wallets 11, enough for major networks but thin on long-tail chains. Staking support is uneven, too: the Vault table marks Solana staking as unsupported, while the Figment release names Solana. The certification badges carry caveats, since Ripple shows FIPS 140-2 Level 4 as available only through partners depending on deployment, and another page cites Level 3 HSMs. For RLUSD users, Wallets can hold and move the stablecoin today, while deeper Ripple Payments settlement remains a roadmap item.

Ripple Custody does not hold assets for clients. Ripple National Trust Bank will be authorized for fiduciary custody once it opens, and at the time of its October 26, 2026 final approval it had not started operations. Firms that need a third party to hold assets as qualified custodian will not get that from the software.

Enforcement history sits at group level. The SEC's case over Ripple's XRP sales ended in August 2025 when both sides dropped their appeals, which left a $125,035,150 civil penalty and an injunction against future registration violations in place. The case concerned XRP sales and did not involve the custody product.

It fits banks and asset managers that want keys in their own HSMs, plus fintechs that need white-label MPC wallets on major chains.

What users say about Ripple Custody

Discussions around Ripple focus on institutional infrastructure expansion, including enterprise custody, prime brokerage, and the adoption of the RLUSD stablecoin. However, substantial criticism centers on whether enterprise services genuinely drive XRP utility, alongside concerns over supply dumps and lack of transparency in payment settlement assets.
