What is Opera?

Opera Wallet is a self-custodial cryptocurrency wallet built into Opera browsers. It lets users connect to Web3 applications, hold tokens and manage assets across supported networks without handing private-key control to Opera. The wider Opera product group also includes MiniPay, a mobile stablecoin wallet integrated into Opera Mini.

Who is behind it

Opera Software is a public browser company headquartered in Oslo, Norway, and listed on Nasdaq under OPRA since 2018. It was founded in 1995 by former Telenor developers Jon Stephenson von Tetzchner and Geir Ivarsøy. Kunlun Tech is its majority owner following a consortium-led acquisition of Opera's browser and consumer business in November 2016 for $600 million. Lin Song has been CEO since October 2025, while James Yahui Zhou serves as executive chairman. The company's July 2018 IPO raised $115 million.

How the wallet works

The wallet operates inside Opera's browser environment instead of existing as a standalone hardware device. Control of credentials remains with the user under this self-custodial model. Opera's Web3 wallet supports dApps, tokens and multichain assets, supporting Celo and Gnosis. MiniPay, introduced in 2023, is a separate mobile stablecoin wallet designed for payments and transfers on Celo and Gnosis.

Opera browsers run on Windows, macOS, Linux, Android, iOS and Chrome OS. The browser also supports Chrome extensions.

Fees and availability

Network fees apply on transactions. Costs depend on the underlying blockchain and the application being used. Opera's browser is available worldwide, while MiniPay has been tailored to mobile users in Africa and beyond.

Track record and risks

Opera added a built-in crypto wallet supporting Web3 dApps to its mobile browser in July 2018. It introduced MiniPay in 2023. Opera reported 296 million monthly active users and full-year 2025 revenue of $614.8 million.

Self-custody leaves seed phrases and private keys vulnerable to theft or loss. Browser integrations can also be affected by extension or browser security flaws. Network support is narrower than the browser's global footprint, and stablecoin use in MiniPay introduces token and blockchain risks.

Opera provides a built-in, non-custodial crypto wallet embedded directly into its desktop and mobile browsers. The browser ecosystem supports decentralized applications through an integrated dApp browser, while mobile variants include dedicated tools such as MiniPay, a stablecoin wallet deployed on networks such as Celo and Gnosis.

Users can interact with decentralized applications, transfer stablecoins, and manage digital assets directly within the browser interface alongside standard features like an integrated ad blocker and free VPN. Because the wallet operates on a self-custodial model, private keys remain directly under the user's control rather than being held on a centralized exchange.

Opera's native crypto wallet supports Celo and Gnosis, while MiniPay is built for low-cost payments on Celo.

Opera is developed by Opera Limited, founded in 1995 in Oslo, Norway, and publicly traded on NASDAQ under the ticker OPRA. Majority-owned by Kunlun Tech, the company generated $614.8M in revenue in 2025 and serves roughly 296 million monthly active users worldwide across its suite of browsers. The wallet is closed-source compared to open-source ecosystem tools.
