What is Edge Wallet?

Edge Wallet is a self-custodial mobile cryptocurrency wallet that secures assets using client-side encryption and an account recovery model based on usernames and passwords rather than conventional seed phrases. Built for iOS and Android, the app provides native support for major blockchains, privacy coins, and integrated decentralized swap routing.

Founding and background

Edge was founded in San Diego, California, in 2014 under the name Airbitz Inc. by Paul Puey, William Swanson, Damian Cutillo, and Scott Morgan. Puey, who serves as chief executive officer, holds a degree in electrical engineering and computer science from UC Berkeley and previously held engineering roles at Nvidia and Chromatic Research. Swanson, the chief architect, studied electrical engineering at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo and is an active contributor to the open-source libbitcoin project. The company operates with a team of about 15 employees.

Custody model and asset support

Edge uses a zero-knowledge security architecture where all private keys and transaction metadata are encrypted locally on the user's mobile device before backing up to redundant cloud servers. Users access their wallets with a username, password, and optional PIN or biometrics, avoiding manual seed-phrase entry. The wallet supports more than 130 assets across chains including Bitcoin, Ethereum, Solana, BNB Chain, Avalanche, Tron, Optimism, Polygon, Base, TON, and Sonic. It also maintains direct support for privacy coins such as Monero and Zcash, including shielded .zcash naming integrations.

Fees and availability

The core mobile wallet is free to download and use on iOS and Android globally, requiring no identity verification or KYC checks for standard self-custodial storage and transfers. Users pay network miner fees when broadcasting on-chain transactions. When users execute cross-chain swaps through integrated liquidity providers like Rango Exchange, or buy crypto with fiat via Cash App Pay, partner fees and routing spreads apply within the interface.

Track record and security incidents

Originally started as a Bitcoin-only mobile wallet and merchant directory in 2014, the project rebranded from Airbitz to Edge in 2018 to support multi-asset functionality. On February 20, 2023, Edge identified a vulnerability tracing back to a 2019 code update in its GUI library that logged unencrypted private keys to local disk during partner WebView sessions. An attacker exploited this flaw to compromise approximately 2,000 keys and sweep low five figures in USD before Edge patched the vulnerability in version 3.3.1 on February 22, 2023, deleting the cached disk logs.

Key risks and limitations

Edge is limited to mobile operating systems and does not offer desktop applications or browser extensions. Client-side encryption keeps private keys encrypted before backup, but losing the username and password can prevent account access.

Edge Wallet is a self-custodial mobile wallet developed by Airbitz Inc., founded in 2014 by Paul Puey and William Swanson in San Diego, California. Instead of requiring users to write down a standard 12- or 24-word recovery phrase at setup, Edge uses client-side encryption tied to a username, password, and optional PIN or biometrics. Keys are encrypted directly on the device before reaching redundant peer-to-peer cloud backup servers.

Multi-chain support spans over 130 tokens across networks including Bitcoin, Ethereum, Solana, BNB Chain, Avalanche, Tron, Optimism, Polygon, Base, and TON. It supports privacy-focused assets such as Monero and Zcash, including a Monero sync upgrade released in July 2026. The app includes decentralized cross-chain swap routing through integrations like Rango Exchange, along with in-app fiat purchases and gift cards.

Edge is limited entirely to mobile devices on iOS and Android, offering no browser extension or desktop application. Hardware wallet integrations are not supported. On February 20, 2023, the team identified a vulnerability dating back to 2019 that inadvertently logged unencrypted private keys to disk during certain partner WebView transactions; an attacker then swept about 2,000 keys and stole low five figures in USD before version 3.3.1 patched the issue.

Edge suits mobile crypto users who focus on financial privacy, hold non-EVM assets like Monero, or want self-custody without handling raw seed phrases.

“I tested Edge briefly a while back. Interface was clean but I am cautious about any wallet until I understand key management fully. I usually compare features against what I already use, which is another wallet for basic storage. I keep backups offline regardless of app choice.”

No platform in crypto is too big for counterparty risk.
There is only code, keys, and who controls them.

Binance estimates $6.3B in impact, with about $3B frozen on-chain.

While initial findings pointed to a compromised DevOps laptop as one possible entry point, Binance says its investigation has since identified additional breach points and remains ongoing.

Even with Binance saying it will cover user losses, this incident underscores two things:

• If you don’t hold the keys, you’re trusting someone else’s operational security with your money.
• Some issuer-controlled tokens can be frozen at the address level. Separately, public ledgers can expose balances and transaction history by default.

Self-custody gives you control of your money.
Privacy helps keep your financial history from becoming a public map.

That is why we’ve spent the last 12 years at Edge building for both, giving you client-side key control alongside native support for privacy assets such as Monero and shielded Zcash.

Crypto has enough tricks. 👻

Your wallet shouldn’t make you choose between privacy, control, usability, and access. Edge was built to make self-custody practical without sanding off the features that make it powerful.

Which treat are you reaching for first? 🎃🍬
