Self-custody Bitcoin wallet with multisig, watch-only mode and PSBT hardware support
BlueWallet is a free, open-source, self-custody Bitcoin wallet for iOS, Android and macOS. It supports on-chain Bitcoin and Lightning, with watch-only wallets, multisig vaults, transaction controls and connections to compatible hardware wallets.
Private keys stay on the device for standard wallets. The app can create or import Bitcoin wallets, back up recovery phrases and use custom derivation paths. Watch-only wallets track addresses, wallets, xpubs or ypubs without importing private keys.
Multisig Vaults require multiple keys to spend Bitcoin. Hardware wallet connections support PSBT signing with devices including Coldcard, Passport, Jade and Keystone. Users can connect BlueWallet to their own Bitcoin node. The app also includes coin control, address labels, Payjoin, reusable BIP47 payment codes and transaction broadcasting.
Lightning is available through a user-connected LNDHub node, and BlueWallet describes the Lightning wallet as experimental. The original lndhub.io service was sunsetted before 2026, so Lightning users need their own backend or an alternative service. The wallet supports BTC only, alongside the Bitcoin blockchain and Lightning Network. It does not support Ethereum, other altcoins, NFTs or decentralized applications.
BlueWallet is free software. On-chain transaction fees are Bitcoin network miner fees selected by the user. RBF and CPFP let users speed up eligible transactions, while batching and coin control provide more control over transaction construction. Refilling a Lightning wallet requires three on-chain confirmations, and confirmation time depends on the selected fee.
The wallet is available for iOS, Android and macOS. Its source code is available under the MIT license, and the project is built with React Native. BlueWallet includes password protection, biometric authentication such as Face ID on iOS, plausible deniability storage options and notifications for pending or confirmed transactions.
BlueWallet launched in 2017 as a Bitcoin-only, self-custody wallet. Its open-source repository accepts contributions and provides an email address for critical bug reports. Self-custody puts recovery phrases and signing devices under the wallet holder’s control, so loss or theft can result in lost funds. Mobile software remains exposed to phishing, malware and device compromise. Multisig reduces reliance on one key but adds setup and backup complexity. Lightning also adds dependence on the connected backend, while user-controlled fees can delay transactions when set too low.
BlueWallet offers Bitcoin self-custody features and transaction control, but its Bitcoin-only scope and Lightning backend requirements limit its reach.
BlueWallet is a self-custodial Bitcoin wallet for iOS, Android and macOS. Private keys stay on the device, and the source code is available under the MIT license.
The wallet handles on-chain Bitcoin and the Lightning Network, with coin control, Payjoin, payment codes, RBF and CPFP. It does not support Ethereum or other altcoins, NFTs or decentralized applications, so a multichain wallet is a better fit for portfolios beyond Bitcoin. On-chain network fees are user-controlled. Lightning use connects through LNDhub to a user-run node, and the original lndhub.io service was sunsetted before 2026, which requires users to configure a Lightning backend.
Its strongest features are watch-only wallets, multisig vaults and PSBT-compatible hardware-wallet support. Watch-only mode can track addresses, wallets or xpubs without importing private keys. Multisig requires multiple keys to spend, while hardware connections include Coldcard, Passport, Jade and Keystone. The trade-off is a steeper learning curve, especially around backups, signing devices and multisig coordination.
BlueWallet supports new addresses, coin control, Payjoin, payment codes and connections to a user's own node. Biometric authentication is available on iOS. The app also supports plausible deniability through multiple or decoy storages, although phishing, device compromise and seed loss remain self-custody risks.
BlueWallet launched in 2017 and has had no reported major security breach or systemic failure through 2026. Its public code and vulnerability-reporting process support review, but open-source software still requires careful device and backup practices. Community-limited development resources have been associated with occasional bugs, and the app can overwhelm first-time users. Its features cover Bitcoin self-custody, watch-only monitoring and advanced signing tools. It does not support assets beyond Bitcoin or provide a managed wallet setup.

The Bitcoin Wallet handles sending, receiving and storing on-chain BTC. It includes coin control, Payjoin, payment codes, RBF and CPFP, plus user-controlled transaction fees.
Watch-only wallets track addresses, wallets, xpubs or ypubs without importing private keys. They can monitor balances and transactions while signing remains elsewhere.
Multisig Vaults require multiple keys to spend Bitcoin. BlueWallet supports vaults with keys held across multiple devices and can work with compatible hardware wallets.
The Lightning Wallet handles Lightning payments through an LNDhub connection. Lightning use requires a user-run node or another available backend, and BlueWallet describes the feature as experimental.
Reports describe BlueWallet as open source. Reports mention an incorrect iOS balance widget, missing wallet renaming on macOS, and Keystone import or sync issues, so the feedback is mixed with several recurring technical issues.
“There's no ONE best wallet, mate. **Here's a few good choices:** \- Top Security Features, Open Source and Non-Custodial \- excellent, easy to use wallet, Open Source and Non-Custodial - top desktop wallet \- Solid choice, Open Source and Non-Custodial, one of the oldest and most trusted Bitcoin…”
“> I use air gap/qr only so BW is the way. I want to isolate the Jade completely That's a really good move. I use a fully airgapped hardware wallet too, and I swear by it. The beauty of working this way, as I'm sure you know, is that you don't have to trust Jade.”
“iOS App crashing After Update today please help!”
“The macOS app is broken These buttons are unclickable, making the app unusable. When can we expect an update correcting this?:-) Thanks.”
“I had a similar situation. Years ago I just wanted to play around with Lightning, opened the BlueWallet Lightning wallet, moved some BTC there, and then basically forgot about it or just didn’t care much about it anymore.”
