Gemini Custody
New York trust company custody with MPC signing and Solana staking from cold storage
What is Gemini Custody?
Company and ownership
Gemini Custody is the institutional storage service of Gemini Trust Company, LLC, a New York trust company. Cameron and Tyler Winklevoss founded Gemini in 2014; Tyler is CEO and Cameron is president. The parent, Gemini Space Station, Inc., is a Nevada corporation based in New York whose Class A shares began trading on the Nasdaq Global Select Market under GEMI on September 12, 2025. The IPO raised $425 million at $28 a share.
In February 2026 Gemini announced a wind-down of operations in Europe and Australia, with a reduction in force of about 200 employees, and in September its Singapore unit received a Major Payment Institution license from the Monetary Authority of Singapore. Second-quarter 2026 custodial fee revenue was $0.6 million, down from $1.9 million a year earlier, which Gemini tied partly to select institutional custody net outflows.
Custody model and security
Gemini Custody runs on multi-party computation infrastructure, which signs transactions without assembling the complete private key during storage or signing. The custody agreement dated October 2, 2026 describes this MPC service as an online system in secured on-premises or cloud environments, separate from Gemini's proprietary offline cold storage system. For cold storage, Gemini cites hardware security modules that never connect to the internet and sit in geographically distributed facilities. It also uses multi-signature technology, and any transfer out of cold storage needs several operators.
Each client's holdings are kept at unique blockchain addresses that can be checked on-chain, and auditors can be given view-only access to balances and activity. Withdrawals and changes to approved addresses are authorized with a passkey, and an account can be set to need approval from more than one user.
Regulation and insurance
Gemini Trust Company describes itself as a fiduciary and qualified custodian under New York Banking Law. It is a limited purpose trust company licensed by the New York State Department of Financial Services, and its Trust Center also lists Nevada foreign independent trust company license FITC00001 plus money transmitter licenses in more than 30 US states and territories under NMLS #1518126. Singapore residents contract with Gemini Digital Payments Singapore Pte. Ltd., the MAS-licensed entity.
Deloitte has run SOC 1 Type 2 and SOC 2 Type 2 examinations every year since 2019, and the latest period listed ends September 30, 2025. Gemini holds ISO/IEC 27001:2022 certification as well. Its insurance disclosure is dated March 1, 2024: $125 million of digital asset coverage for certain losses, made up of $100 million for cold storage assets and $25 million of commercial crime cover for the hot wallet.
Products and integrations
The fee schedule is public: 0.40% a year or $30 per asset per month, whichever is higher, with no minimum balance and the setup fee waived. Network fees are passed through on withdrawals, and legacy custody accounts pay $125 per withdrawal. Clients see balances and statements in a self-service portal or pull them through APIs on Gemini's developer platform.
Custody assets can be sold through Gemini Instant Trade from cold storage, and withdrawals to a Gemini exchange account are credited at once. For larger orders, eOTC offers delayed net settlement and intraday trading credit. Since June 2025, clients who opt in can stake SOL from segregated cold storage wallets with Gemini's validator or one they choose; Purpose Investments' Solana ETF and DeFi Development Corp. were named as users. Gemini also said in December 2025 that it holds assets for three VanEck funds, among them the VanEck Solana ETF.

Our review
Gemini Custody suits US funds and corporates that want a New York trust company with annual Deloitte SOC reports and posted fees. The March 2024 insurance figure and the 2026 custody outflows are its main weak points.
Gemini Custody is easy to vet. The New York trust charter makes Gemini Trust Company a fiduciary under state banking law, and Deloitte's SOC 1 Type 2 and SOC 2 Type 2 reports run back to 2019. Pricing is public too. At the posted 0.40% rate, a $10 million position costs about $40,000 a year.
The two custody systems carry different risks. MPC signing runs online in on-premises or cloud environments, while the cold storage system relies on air-gapped HSMs and multi-signature controls. Insurance is the soft spot. Gemini still cites coverage as of March 2024, and only $25 million of the $125 million total applies to the hot wallet.
The custody business is shrinking. Assets on platform fell from $18.2 billion to $8.4 billion between the second quarters of 2025 and 2026, with institutional custody outflows among the causes Gemini named. Staking is the exception, with revenue up 50% year over year to $4.0 million in the second quarter of 2026 as Gemini built in-house validators. The custody agreement leaves staking off unless a client's contract provides for it. Leadership has thinned as well, and Gemini's about page lists an interim CFO and an interim general counsel.
The enforcement record traces back to Gemini Earn, the lending program run with Genesis. Gemini paid a $37 million NYDFS fine and put $40 million into the Genesis bankruptcy, and in January 2026 the SEC and Gemini filed a joint stipulation to dismiss the SEC's Earn case with prejudice after investors got their crypto back in kind. A separate $5 million CFTC settlement from January 2025, over statements made while the agency reviewed a bitcoin futures contract, became the subject of a joint motion to vacate in May 2026; the CFTC said the penalty will not be refunded.
Gemini Custody fits US asset managers and ETF issuers that want a New York trust company with posted fees, along with corporate treasuries that plan to stake SOL from cold storage. It is a weaker match for clients in Europe or Australia, where Gemini has wound down, and for institutions that need high insurance limits.
