Immutable is an Ethereum layer-2 gaming platform designed to scale web3 titles with gas sponsorship for Passport users. The network ecosystem spans more than 800 games; Immutable's website names Ubisoft and NetMarble.
Founders and backing
Founded in 2018 under the name Fuel Games, Immutable Pty Ltd operates from Sydney, Australia, with a team of more than 240 people. The company was started by co-founders Robbie Ferguson, James Ferguson, and Alex Connolly. Immutable raised a $2.4M seed round in July 2018 led by Continue Capital and Nirvana Capital. In March 2022, the company secured $200M in Series C funding led by Temasek at a $3.5B valuation, alongside announcing a $100M ecosystem fund with GameStop.
Architecture and player onboarding
The network operates via Ethereum layer-2 architecture, using zero-knowledge technology. Gas fees for end players are abstracted using Immutable Passport, a non-custodial wallet and authentication system that lets users register with email or social credentials while the platform sponsors transaction gas. For developers, smart contracts deploy via EVM-compatible tooling on Immutable zkEVM, while off-chain services handle player analytics, referral pipelines, and wishlist conversions.
Fees and platform usage
Players on Passport pay 0 in native gas fees due to the built-in gas sponsorship layer. Platform transactions link to the native IMX token. Immutable zkEVM accounts for $11.1M in total value locked, with the broader platform having processed over 220 million lifetime transactions. Immutable is globally accessible.
Milestones and security incidents
Originally known for the collectible trading card game Gods Unchained, the firm launched mobile fantasy RPG Guild of Guardians in May 2024 and expanded into web2 audience attribution tools in August 2026. The platform has navigated operational challenges, including laying off 20 staff members in July 2022. On September 21, 2024, the Immutable Discord server suffered a brief compromise when an external contractor account was breached to distribute phishing links. The team contained the incident within two hours and made the affected user whole.
